One day, some business people were walking along the shore after a busy day of meetings. While walking on the beach, they noticed a little girl picking up something and gently throwing it back into the sea.

Approaching the girl, they saw that there were thousands of starfish lying on the shore. One of the men asked the girl, “What are you doing?”

“Throwing the starfish back into the sea,” she replied. “If I don’t, they will dry out and die.” 

Many went silent until one voice said, “You can’t save them all. There are kilometres of beach and thousands of starfish. You won’t make a difference.”

After listening politely, the girl picked up another starfish, threw it into the ocean, and, smiling at the man, said, “That one made it.” She picked up a second one, threw it into the ocean, and said, “That one made it as well.”

“I made a difference for those two.”
